RegWise ("we," "our," or "the app") is a registration-plate scanning and vehicle valuation app for the Irish used-car market. This policy explains what data RegWise collects, why, and how it's handled.
RegWise uses your device's camera to scan vehicle registration plates. This is processed entirely on your device using on-device text recognition. No photo or camera image is ever saved, stored, or transmitted anywhere — it is used only momentarily to detect the plate text, then discarded.
When you scan or manually enter a vehicle registration, RegWise sends that registration number to our own backend server, which looks up vehicle information from several third-party Irish vehicle data sources (including MotorCheck, Cartell, DoneDeal, Carzone, CarsIreland, the Irish government's official vehicle services, and car-recalls.eu) in order to provide you with vehicle details, market valuation, tax and NCT status, and recall information. This is the core function of the app.
RegWise sends your device's Android ID (a device identifier, not tied to your name or any personal account) to our backend, solely to track how many free trial scans your device has used. This exists to keep the free trial fair, including for someone who reinstalls the app or clears its local storage. This identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any other personal information, because RegWise does not collect any.
When a valuation completes, aggregate details about the vehicle (make, model, year, and the resulting price statistics) are logged to our backend to help us understand market trends over time. This is deliberately anonymous — it is never linked to a registration number, a device, or any identifier that could connect it back to you or the specific vehicle scanned.
RegWise records whether each of the data sources above succeeded or failed on a given lookup, so we can notice if one of them breaks. These records contain no personal or device information — just which source was used and whether it worked.
If you choose to generate a Common Faults report or a Total Cost of Ownership estimate, the relevant vehicle details (make, model, year, mileage, and similar facts) are sent through our backend to Anthropic's Claude API to generate that content. No information about you personally is included in this request.
If you use the in-app "Suggest an improvement or report a bug" feature, it opens your own device's email app with a pre-filled message addressed to us. RegWise itself does not collect, store, or see this message — it is sent directly from your email account to ours, the same as any other email you choose to send.
RegWise has no user accounts, no login, and no sign-up of any kind. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or physical address. We do not access or collect your location. We do not run advertising, and we do not use analytics or tracking tools beyond what's described above.
RegWise offers an optional one-time purchase to unlock full access after the free trial. This is handled entirely by Google Play's own billing system. RegWise never sees, receives, or stores your payment details.
The information described above is used solely to:
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with third parties except as necessary to provide the app's core functionality (the vehicle data sources above, and Anthropic for AI-generated report content).
All data sent from the app to our backend is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Our backend infrastructure includes access controls and rate limiting designed to prevent unauthorised use.
Anonymised market data and service reliability records are not linked to any device or person, so there is nothing to individually delete. If you would like your device's trial-tracking record removed, you can request this at any time by emailing us at the address below.
RegWise is not directed at children and is not intended for use by anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
